AbstractThe reports in this book extend over the years 1828-1865 and are taken from the newspapers and magazines of the Cotta publishing house. These years were crucial for the United States and the German settlers. The Germans in America were, for the first time, gaining visibility on the national scene. They became active in political life, showed leadership in cultural, political and military arenas, and achieved some influence as an ethnic identity. In this book there are writings by distinguished politicians, experienced journalists, ladies of society, immigrants on their westward journey, and officers from the battlefield. It is interesting to notice how variedly the Germans reacted to the American environment, how they transferred to American life the notions, convictions, and prejudices gained from their history, and how they learned to synthesize new social and cultural patterns in a new land. Includes Preface and Introduction in English; text in German.
NotesEnglish title: "Reports from America in German Newspapers, 1828 to 1865." Reports from German immigrants published in the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung. Also at WHS.
