AbstractThe memoirs of Dr. Joachim von Elbe give an account of an exemplary life spent in the service of the author's native country, Germany, and of his adopted country, the United States. The book describes the demise of the Weimar Republic and the advent of Nazism, and sets forth a succinct record of the postwar developments that led to the restoration of German sovereignty after the catastrophe of 1945, and to the reentry of Germany into the community of free and peace-loving nations. The many favorable reviews which the book received stress the author's contributions to the reconstruction of the German legal and constitutional order and to the Paris Agreements of 1955 -- the continuing basis of Germany's membership in the Western Alliance.
