AbstractThis article depicts the political climate in Iowa and Illinois during Abraham Lincoln's time in office, especially as it relates to German-Americans. The letter mentioned in the title is reproduced along with several other letters to and from various political figures and citizens. Canisius had written Lincoln regarding the Massachusetts Amendment (which deprived immigrants of the right to vote) and naturalization laws to which Lincoln responded in a letter dated May 17, 1859.
