AbstractThe author was a monk at the Benedictine Monastery in Einsiedeln, Switzerland, before he came to America to do missionary work in North Dakota. Father Justus was one of the first resident priests of Strasburg, North Dakota in the very early 1900's. Father Justus later returned to Switzerland. It was there he wrote, in German, this daily life account of the Prairie Schoolmaster. The old manuscript was translated. It is a primary source of information concerning the life of a typical early American settlement of Germans from Russia. Their lives and values centered very much around the parish church. Next to the parish priest, the Schoolmaster (Schulmeister) was probably the most respected person in a community. He was usually well educated and had many responsibilities. He had to train and lead the choir and most regular school classes. He even conducted prayer services in the absence of the parish priest.
