AbstractGuidebooks, such as this one, which contains advice from a German immigrant living in America to his fellow countrymen back home, were important links between a family's desire to emigrate and their need for knowledge of what to expect in the new country. Bogen's guidebook contains not only encouraging words to ease the new immigrants' arrival and rational advice but also details on every aspect of American life imaginable. It is written in German on one page and in English on the facing page.
NotesGerman text, parallel English translation. First published in 1851, this guidebook is still of interest as it shows the concerns of immigrants in general.
