| Abstract | Working largely from original and widely scattered sources, the author has brought together material which might otherwise have been lost over the passing years. He describes early German immigration in the 17th and 18th century; and the routes of the German immigrant arrivals in the late 1900's, who were drawn to America by new western railroad eager to find farmers to populate their rights of way. He tells many fascinating tales of the development of new fields of science and engineering by groups who transplanted German training to these shores. His surveys are inclusive and his interests catholic. His history embraces all the German-speaking immigrants, regardless of their area of origin, their religion, or the time of their arrival. |
