| Abstract | Henry A. Grunwald's introductory essay combines personal history and generalized observation and suggests the wide variety of refugee and emigrant experience in a society that has been shaped and continues to be shaped by this very experience. The following first group of essays focuses on Austrian refugees and emigrants to the US during the 1930s. The second section includes contributions about neighboring European countries annd spans the time period from the late 19th century to the present. The third group of essays is concerned with the literature and language of immigrant communities in the USA and completes this documentation of the overall experience of emigrants as a dynamic process on intercultural learning in a multicultural and polyethnic society. |
| Notes | This collection of essays had its origin in the annual conference of the Austrian Association of American Studies in 1988, the year when Austria remembered the manifold dire consequences of the fateful "Anschluss" to the German "Third Reich" in 1938. ; book, in MadCat. |
