AbstractStempfel shows that German-American organizations were not restricted to maintaining their German heritage, but that they were innovators in many aspects of life -- music, theater, sports, celebrations and entertainment, and in social services. The myth of the melting pot must be reevaluated because there is more than passive assimilation of the German-speaking populace, rather there is active involvement in the creation of the culture of the Midwest.
