AbstractCollection of Soergel's letters and reports. One hundred fifty years ago a collegial group of privileged German noblemen proposed and founded the Verein zum Schutze Deutscher Einwanderer in Texas to populate and cultivate the prairies and woodlands of Central Texas: the Adelsverein. Alwin Soergel joined the enterprise. Soergel's writing represents something between popular journalism and a chronicle continuing the German romantic notion of a mythic wilderness, land open to opportunity for those who were willing to harness it and capitalize on its riches. He offered the settlers guidance. They benefitted from his first-hand observations, advice and warnings. The project of the Adelsverein failed causing thousands of Germans who had immigrated to Texas much suffering.
