| Abstract | The book documents the generation of German-speaking refugee historians who settled in the United States after fleeing Hitler's Europe. Bio-bibliographical entries on eigthy-eight of these refugees chronicle their scholarly contributions, historical interests, and impact on the American historical profession after 1945. A Past Renewed is a tribute to those refugee historians who overcame the difficult circumstances of their emigration and forged new lives in the United States. They were the interpreters and representatives of German culture in their new country and inspired generations of American students to better understand the developments, achievements, and tragedies of German and modern European history. |
