AbstractCrum's impeachment story is an outstanding example of the fear, hatred, and paranoia that swept Montana and the nation during the World War I period. The transcript of the Crum impeachment trial provides a unique opportunity to examine and analyze the ideas and words used by common people who testified during the trial to damn the judge (who was of German descent) and to demonstrate their own patriotism. Attention to the transcript illuminates some of the cultural and political fabric of a trying time in American history. It was a time when immigrant outsiders or "others" did everything possible to present themselves as American.
