AbstractAmong the many Lutheran emigrants who left Germany to seek religious freedom in America were 40 families who arrived in Milwaukee in the early part of October, 1839. About half of the families, many of them from Pomerania, established the community now known as Freistadt. They proved to be influential not only in the church, but also in community affairs.
