| Abstract | The reconstruction of the image of the New World which attracted emigrants from Schleswig-Hostein is in many cases a doubtful endeavor due to the lack of comprehensive material. A closer look at the group of emigrants, however, which came to North America as pastors supplied in considerable numbers for American and Canadian Synods by the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Kropp seems to allow a more promising approach. Pastor Johannes Paulsen who founded the Kropp Seminary in 1882 on request of the American Lutheran Church in order to train seminarists for their service abroad played a dominating role in the transmission of a -- in many respects -- questionable image of America |
