| Abstract | The four decades of reception of critical theory in the U.S. occurred in five phases: (1) simultaneous presence and nonreception in the social sciences of the 1940s, (2) a political reception manque in the 1960s, (3) reception in the history of ideas that began in the early 1970s and is still continuing, (4) a series of denunciations also beginning in the 1970s, and finally (5) a theoretical reception beginning in the mid-1970s, which is in the spirit of critical theory but tends to go beyond the original boundaries.
