AbstractBaldwin's article discusses both the negative and positive receptions of German immigrants to Kentucky in the 19th century. It focuses on two aspects of Germans' reception specific to the situation in Kentucky: the growth of nativism in the mid-1850's as well as the immigration of the "most radical element of the forty-eighters" to the state.
