AbstractThe hearings against the national German-American Alliance amounted to an anti-German inquisition. The Alliance was unquestionably assumed to be guilty for the single reason that it was German-American and the time was decidedly anti-German. It was an obvious target, therefore, as the major national German-American organization. Each witness was treated as if already tried and convicted before being allowed to speak. And when they did, they became the subjects of verbal abuse and harassment. Indeed, the rude, crude and shabby treatment accorded to the witnesses by the bigoted Committee is an indication of the Anti-German hysteria of the time
