AbstractThe large German emigration of the 1850's, so important for America, has usually been considered a reaction to the political disturbances of the year 1848. In fact, it has a much more complex background, with economic factors playing a large part. The emigration of this period was mainly from Southwest Germany, and especially from those districts where small agricultural holdings prevailed. From the time of the Napoleonic wars agriculture had been profoundly changed. Many peasants mortgaged their holdings to finance the new agriculture, and with the transfer of capital to other fields and the crop failures of the 'forties and 'fifties, large numbers were forced to emigrate. The legislation which followed the uprisings of 1848 completed the emancipation of the peasants, but the transition brought many hardships and further emigration, mainly to America, where the agricultural prospects were then especially bright
