AbstractThe matched-guise technique offers a unique chance to gain rather objective insight into the informants' language attitudes. The regional-standard speaker was generally regarded to have higher intelligence and status than the speakers of Pennsylvania German and Pennsylvania German English. Social success is associated mostly with standard American English. These results reflect the presence of the stereotype of the 'dum Dutchman'. On the other hand, both ethnically-marked varieties were favored over the regional standard in connection with emotional issues and solidarity.
