| Abstract | Each language and dialect of the Great Plains has its own stories, and faced its own problems as well as the problems of all non-English tongues. Common themes recur through the essays: bilingualism, differential use of language, religious and cultural forces for the preservation of the native tongue, and social pressures for the adoption of English. The transplanted languages themselves became more conservative than in their native land, adapted to face a new environment, and enforced social pressures of their own. At the same time, they left their benchmark on the English that was to -- or soon may -- supplant them |
