AbstractIn presenting this survey the author has divided the literature into five periods: The period of religious influence, 1683 to 1800, characterized by writing in High German chiefly by educated immigrants; the period of transition, 1800 to 1861, when the dialect first began to be used; the language-conscious period, 1861 to 1902; the local-color period, from 1902 to 1928; during which time the eccentricities of the Pennsylvania Dutch were over-exploited by popular writers; the folk-conscious period, from 1928 to the present, when students are beginning to give more serious attention to all phases of Pennsylvania German culture. In the various sections three types of writing -- those in High German, in English, and in dialect, with an emphasis on the last -- are described and appraised
