AbstractSome of the German speaking immigrants to Virginia were fresh immigrants from one of the numerous German fatherlands, or from Switzerland or Alsace in France. Many came to Virginia as "American Germans" from settlements in Maryland, Pennsylvania, or New York. In various ways, these men and women adjusted to the new land and its demands. While telling of their contribution to the life of Virginia in three centuries, the author has tried never to lose sight of the continuous process of cultural and social assimilation as it affected individuals and, where German group life existed, as it was met with by the group
