AbstractGerman-American Studies is a complementary discipline which may carry German out of the German department into other parts of academia and bring back from other departments new insights and perhaps also new students. It can be easily integrated into existing forms of German instruction without threatening the German or other foreign language programs. It could create a counterbalance to the erosion of German programs by approaching German language and culture as a legitimate American phenomenon
