AbstractThe Germans abroad (Auslandsdeutsche), found in East and Southeast Europe, had already emigrated centuries earlier from German-speaking areas of Central Europe to the Austrian and Russian empires. These Germans living in Russia and Austria-Hungary participated in a second emigration, when the conditions in Europe no longer satisfied them. This time they migrated west to the New World, together with Russians, Jews, Poles and Ukrainians to their new homes. Among these Austrians participating in the new emigration were the forefathers of the American Bukovinians now living in the United States, Canada and Brazil.
