AbstractThe principal purpose of the lecture series was to bring together students of German-American and Afro-American history to suggest how the themes of the Protest affected blacks, Germans, and, indeed, all Americans over three centuries. Much of the lecturers' work was devoted to locating common points of reference and experience for Blacks and Germans. The lectures include: Introduction by Randall M. Miller; "From 1688 to 1788: Slavery and freedom in Pennsylvania" by Gary B. Nash; "The quest for freedom: Colonization, abolition, and European immigration, 1817-1860 " by Richard Blackett; "The mid-nineteenth-century slavery crisis and the German Americans" by James M. Bergquist; '"Uneasy neighbors: Germans and Blacks in nineteenth-century Lancaster County; "Germans and Blacks in Texas" by Terry G. Jordan.
