AbstractAntonius Holtmann follows the North German Cincinnati protestants to their pioneer settlement in Indiana, examining the question of clergy or lay supremacy at the White Creek (1840-1905) via close reading of the Protokollbücher and the constitution of St. Johannes Kirche. He shows that the congregational assembly was the primary decision maker in matters of organization, discipline, church rules and on details concerning mutual obligations of pastor and congregation, including decisions against pastor and synod. Not until the 1890s did matters of administration move gradually into the pastoral domain.
