AbstractThe author examines the Dutch-American experience of ethnic and religious clustering in Montana. Parallel to what German settlements experienced, the language of the Dutch pioneers retreated and surrendered to English, but intra-group marriage is still common. What has kept them together and what is valued as the source of cohesion and catalyst of heritage appreciation is their church, the Christian Reformed Church. This nationwide denomination has a membership that still is almost exclusively of Dutch descent.
