AbstractThe author offers an insightful and well-documented overview on concepts and realities of various emigration societies (1820-1860). A colonialist political movement among liberal and patriotic German intellectuals sought to channel emigration into particular areas or "colonies" which would then become magnets for future emigrants. While all of the nationally-minded group emigrations dispersed soon after arrival, many of their members contributed to the concentration of German settlers in the Midwest and Texas.
