| Abstract | Close to 10,000 Hessians immigrated to New Jersey between 1848 and 1870. But why did almost 900 Hesse-Darmstadters settle in Trenton? And more specifically, why did 38 Bechtheimers choose Trenton as their new 'Heimat'? This essay attempts to answer these questions. Dutch/Frisian individualism is reflected in preferential settlement patterns based on regional, not national, origin. The author's study of the Frisians in Paterson, NJ (1880-1914) shows great changes in employment patterns experienced by largely rural immigrants atttracted to a city of rapid industrial growth. |
