AbstractThe author examines the function of "...Music in the multi-religious German-American community". Communal by nature, music brought together the diverse German elements. It served, moreover, as a means of expressing the commonness of German culture by bridging regional, linguistic, and religious differences. Repertoires came to form an aesthetic core that the community redefined and shaped through performance. Bohnman's case study was done in Bonduel, Wisconsin, a small town settled almost entirely by Germans.
