| Abstract | The author's critique of the English-Canadian perspectives of German-Canadians scores an important point: when historiography blends out an ethnographically significant component of a population, the accuracy of history and the credibility of historians are at risk. Like the U.S. panorama of German ethnicity, Canada shows strong denominational and ethnolinguistic divisions, largely based on regional origin. Unlike the U.S., however, Reichsdeutsche comprised a much smaller number than Germans from regions of Eastern Europe with a strong Mennonite component. The uniting factor for all groups is their German heritage. Language and culture maintenance before World War I was quite natural. Today's political acceptance of ethnic diversity holds some promise for the preservation of the German-Canadian heritage. |
