AbstractThe author goes into 19th-century German immigrant judgments and prejudices of the Anglo-Americans and their society, as conveyed in letters. He finds explicit judgments that are virtually unanimous (stereotypes) and others that differ considerably on a given phenomenon. The emphasis of the study is on the descriptive validity or the source value of the opinions expressed by the immigrants. Comparatively, Helbich probes into the differences between the perceptions of the "common immigrant" and the "trained observer." Traditionally the writings of educated foreign travelers about America and Americans have been accepted as valuable source material of US social history. Helbich adds the record left by "untrained observers."
