AbstractThe Harmonists, religious dissidents who broke with the "Evangelische Landeskirche," earned bitter scorn in their home communities for disturbing the peace and order of these traditionally homogeneous villages. In America, on the other hand, they were highly praised and admired for their astonishing economic success. New Harmony, their second town, became known as "the wonder of the West" -- The first German "economic miracle." Only in our time, through Sister city friendship bonds, have the Harmonists pioneers been exonerated "back home." They are now a source of pride for their achievements in distant America.
