| Abstract | From the late 19th century until his death in 1958, Austrian-born Cyril Colnik made his living making the functional, beautiful. He saw himself as a craftsman but his achievements in wrought iron resulted in helping forge an elegant identity for his adopted city of Milwaukee. This 30-minute documentary tells the story of an immigrant who lost his family, found a skill, and created a legend for himself beginning with his contributions to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Today, with the resurgence of the decorative arts, many collectors seek out the real Colnik, and artists look to his legacy for clues of skills which nearly disappeared. |
