AbstractWhen the immigrants first arrived in Wisconsin from Pomerania in the middle 1800s, they brought with them the dialect of their homeland, Pommern Platt. Through four generations this language has survived in many parts of Wisconsin, including the Wausau-Merrill area, and is now in the process of dying out. This video is an attempt to preserve for posterity a small sampling of the language in use.The setting is the Pommerscher Verein's annual 'Piknik im Bush' at the Krenz park in the Township of Berlin north of Wausau. Visitors from Germany, for the most part born in the Pommern, joined with area residents in unrehearsed dialogue in the language of their heritage from a state that no longer exists.
