AbstractThe 1848 refugees from Germany to America were often highly educated, imbued with ideas of democracy, and eager to improve the world. They hoped to find utopia in the United States, or at least temporary shelter until conditions in Europe improved. In America, however, they were faced with the new dilemma of the American Union. This article examines how the 48ers dealt with the problems posed by the controversy leading to the Civil War and Reconstruction, using Carl Schurz as an example.
