| Abstract | Approximately 72,000 Luxembourgers left the underdeveloped Grand Duchy of Luxembourg during the 19th century to begin a new life in the Middle West of the United States. Being farmers, they faced more or less the same challenges than in their home country, the only difference being that they had unlimited access to inexpensive land. ... A natural sense for planned action and proportions, and the presence of similar materials in the form of stones, sand and lime stimulated the creation of comparable building forms. Also, the construction mode corresponded to the imported values and the rural mentality of its inhabitants. ... The Luxembourg language in the United States - although threatened by extinction - is a valuable component in the interaction of cultures. To give some impression of 'Luxembourg Culture in America,' two CDs with language recordings are enclosed in the present volume. These documents...are accompanied by musical arrangements. - jacket |
