Abstract[This] is the most extensive reference work on variation in Pennsylvania German (also known as Pennsylvania Dutch), compiled by one of the founders of modern Pennsylvania German linguistics. The core of this book consists of 173 maps showing regional differences in the formerly German-speaking area of southeast Pennsylvania. Each map displays regional variants for a word or grammatical form throughout the area. Seifert, working with Carroll Reed, interviewed almost 100 speakers across the territory during the 1940s, using an extensive questionnaire, one later modified and used in other studies of German in the United States. This work is especially important now that Pennsylvania German is no longer spoken in many of the communities he surveyed in the middle of this century. The language is, in fact, rapidly dying out everywhere among all populations except among the Old Order Amish and Old Order Mennonites. The volume also reprints four of Seifert's classic essays on the dialect geography of Pennsylvania German, as well as biographies of the linguistic consultants, an original essay on the development of Pennsylvania German dialectology and linguistics by Mark Louden, and a new biography of Seifert by Howard Martin and Suzanne Treichel. -- jacket
