AbstractThe Turnfest held in Frankfurt in July 1880 was an international event, including delegations from "a number of European countries as well as a 400-member group of German-Americans from the US. The visit of the American Turners was all the more significant given the rift that had developed between the American and German Turners over political issues since the founding of the new German empire in 1871. American Turners were quite vocal in their criticism of their German counterparts for their lack of political activity in the new empire....By returning to the German fatherland and demonstrating their gymnastic skills, these German-American Turners proved that they had remained true to their German cultural heritage but had also become strong adherents of American democracy and political freedom."
