AbstractExamines three letters written by Paul Nicolaus Bernhard Josephy Schuecking (1787-1867), known as Modestus Schuecking, who visited from north Germany and took up residence for nearly two years in Steubenville, Ohio. Schuecking sharply criticizes "the habits of descendants of middle-class German immigrants" and details his concerns for educational practices, with an emphasis on the education of girls.
