AbstractAugust Auerbach, son of the popular German-Jewish author Berthold Auerbach, sailed to America on August 16, 1873 and returned to Germany at the end of September 1874. His letters home reveal the difficulty August experienced in "creating a self-image that was in some way independent of his father and his father's reputation as author, literary authority on America, and Jew."
