AbstractThis study employs individual-level socioeconomic data contained in Prussian tax rolls and local parish records to reconstruct the pre-migration experience in northwestern Germany of a sizeable group of immigrants who settled in Osage County, Missouri, in the mid-nineteenth century. Based on the analysis of these data, the study argues that rural German peasant society was not one dimensional in nature...but rather far more intricate and multi-faceted in terms of socioeconomic class and land ownership.
