AbstractGerman-speaking people migrated to other countries besides the United States, and sometimes lived "for a few months to a few generations in other countries" before immigrating to the U.S. The author examines cases of German-speaking peoples settling in (and sometimes then emigrating from) England and Ireland, the Banat (now Hungary), Russia (Volga, Ukraine, "mother/daughter colonies," Bessarabia, and Bukovina), Australia, and Brazil.
