AbstractTranslated by Herman A. Hartmann. "On April 5, 1854, the American ship Powhattan...had 315 emigrants as passengers destined for New York [sailing from the port of Le Havre]. They were within sight of the coast of New Jersey when the ship sank with all passengers on board....[A]mong that number were 45 Bavarian citizens...from the governmental region of the Pfalz."
