AbstractNestled in the wooded valley of the Iowa River in east central Iowa, the seven villages that comprise the Amana Colonies retain ample evidence of the work of the sturdy German Pietists who settled and constructed the villages a century and a half ago. Refugees from religious persecution in the German states of the early nineteenth century, the founders of Amana were the descendants of an eighteenth century religious movement first known as the Community of True Inspiration (Wahre Inspirations Gemeinde).
