AbstractUndoubtedly, there is a connection between Boas's German and Jewish background, status as an immigrant, and commitment to an anthropology that allowed for the strong influence of environmental factors on anatomical ones; that is, that sought to undermine a biological or racial determinism and replace it with an explanatory framework focused on culture. However, "in order to be taken as scientific, Boas's work had to appear value-neutral and de-politicized.... It was only such an impersonal narrative...that had the greatest chance of proving effective and bringing about the sorts of political and social changes that would ultimately benefit Jews and other minorities in America."
