AbstractUhry's play portrays a wealthy and assimiliated German-Jewish family in Atlanta, Georgia, at the time when Hitler is invading Poland. This article considers the broader historical context of the Jewish community in Atlanta during this period and then examines the play in-depth with a focus on the attitude of the play's German Jewish family toward Ostjuden.
