AbstractOn June 15, 1904, the members of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, one of the German churches in the Kleindeutschland [Little Germany] area of Manhattan, chartered an excursion ferry, the General Slocum. A fire aboard the ship resulted in the loss of 1,021 people, seventy-five percent of those onboard.
