AbstractThe first part of the article examines the formation and eventual suspension of Der Nationale Deutschamerikanische Lehrerbund. The Lehrerbund was created in August 1870 "when one hundred teachers of German met...to promote...the best interests of German instruction in the United States." "Exuburent German patriotism" led to the demise of the Lehrerbund when America declared war on Germany in 1917.
