AbstractFrom the 1894 edition preface: "This story is based upon facts taken from an old diary of one of the early settlers on Lake Winnebago. The story appeared in German from the Publishing House of Mr. G. Brumder, Milwaukee, Wis. . . . Its interest is greatly increased from the fact that it happened so near our homes, and in our own state. Older people all over the state tell sad tales of their hardships in early times. . . . [W]e very diligently set to work to translate it, and after revising it several times, and rejecting all long and superfluous words, we deem it ready to put before the public." None of the characters in the book appear to be German immigrants.
