AbstractFrom the conclusion: "The individual political worlds of German and Irish voters as recorded in the poll books shed considerable new light on past political life. The poll books tell us that there were more similarities than differences in the political engagement of members of these largest of immigrant groups. The three case studies explored here provide little support for the notion that the Germans and the Irish represented dramatically different accommodations to nineteenth century mass politics in the New World. In all three cases the Germans and the Irish participated in politics at about the same level and exhibited in their voting behavior about the same degree of partisan unity."
